I was on a call with a brilliant Assistant Principal recently. Let’s call her Anne.
She told me she feels anxious. A lot.
So she tried to fix it with meditation.
She fired up the app. Sat down. Closed her eyes.
And lasted exactly five minutes.
Why?
Because her brain wouldn't shut up.
"What am I doing?"
"I gotta go."
"I gotta do this and this and this."
She felt like a failure because she couldn't "get there." She couldn't force her mind to be quiet.
Moral of the story is:
I actually went through a two-year meditation certification program.
And I told Anne the cold, hard truth:
If somebody says they don't have a hard time clearing their mind...
They are a freaking liar.
You see, we think the goal is to be a Zen master levitating in silence.
It’s not.
The practice isn't "having a quiet mind." The practice is simply noticing that you're distracted ... and coming back.
Now, how does this apply to your leadership?
Running a school is no different.
You are going to have days that feel like a "hot mess."
You will get distracted.
Fire alarms (literal and metaphorical) will go off. People will interrupt you.
You might think that means you're failing. You might think you aren't "built for this."
You’re wrong.
The secret to sustainable leadership isn't preventing the chaos. That’s impossible.
The secret is having the tools to notice the chaos, give yourself some grace, and navigate back to your center.
But that is really hard to do alone.
Especially when you feel like you're running in circles.
That’s why I offer 1:1 coaching and The Ruckus Maker Mastermind.
To help you find that center again.
So...
If you want to stop feeling anxious and start building a campus experience worth showing up for ...
Then let's chat.
I've opened up a few spots for a no-strings-attached exploration call.
We'll look at where you are, where you want to go, and see if I can help you get there.
Keep Making a Ruckus,
Danny
