The brutal truth about your school's "special sauce"

Quick question: What makes your school special?

If your answer includes:

  • student-centered

  • data-driven, or

  • we're like a family … — I

I have some uncomfortable news for you …

After working with thousands of school leaders, I've noticed a pattern that's both fascinating and terrifying: The things most principals think make their schools special... actually make them forgettable.

Today, I'm sharing a radically different approach that's helping Ruckus Makers discover what truly makes their schools stand out.

I call it Strategy Therapy.

And I’ll share how you can apply this framework to your school strategy next …

Why Most Schools Are Accidentally Making Themselves Forgettable

Most school leaders are lying to themselves.

Not intentionally, of course.

But every time they claim their school is "innovative," "student-centered," or "data-driven," they're actually making themselves more forgettable.

Let me explain.

Walk into any school's main office and grab their strategic plan. Then drive across town and grab another. And another.

I'll bet you my favorite coffee mug that they all use the same buzzwords:

  • "Student-centered learning"

  • "Data-driven instruction"

  • "Collaborative environment"

  • "Whole child approach"

It's like showing up to prom wearing the same dress as everyone else, then wondering why nobody notices you.

But here's where it gets interesting...

The schools that truly stand out? They didn't start with fancy mission statements or endless planning sessions. They started with something much harder:

Brutal honesty.

These leaders had the courage to ask two deceptively simple questions:

  1. What actually makes us special?

  2. How special is it really?

Most couldn't answer these questions without squirming. And that's exactly the point.

Because here's what nobody tells you about school strategy: The uncomfortable truth is the path to breakthrough.

Think about it:

  • If everyone claims to be "student-centered," is anyone really student-centered?

  • If every school is "data-driven," is that actually a differentiator?

  • If your strategic plan could be copy-pasted onto any other school's letterhead... is it really strategic?

This is why I developed something I call "Strategy Therapy."

And because you’re a subscriber to Ruckus Makers News+, I’m giving it to you today as part of your subscription. Thank you 🙏

Strategy Therapy is not another framework. It's not another planning session. It's a brutally honest conversation about what makes your school truly different — and what's just educational buzzword bingo.

The process isn't comfortable. But neither is watching your school blend into the background while others stand out.

Here's what one principal told me after going through Strategy Therapy:

"I realized we were trying to be everything to everyone. Now we're focused on the one thing we do better than anyone else. It's terrifying and liberating at the same time."

The truth is, your school can be special. But first, you need to be honest about whether it actually is.
