DO SCHOOL DIFFERENT

Before You Coach Others, Coach Yourself

Sometimes the littlest things can feel like a Big Issue.

A teacher hasn't been cleaning up her room at the end of the day. You've mentioned it twice. And nothing's changed.

But it’s keeping you up at night because you’re wondering, Am I being too picky, or is this worth taking on?

That was Nate's Big Issue.

Nate is a principal in our Mastermind, and a few weeks ago he brought this scenario to the hot seat.

On paper, it might seem like a small thing: a summer school teacher has been leaving a messy classroom at the end of each day; there have been repeated requests to address it, without effect.

The sticking point for Nate is partly to do with perceived non-compliance. But he’s also simply never had to navigate this specific kind of confrontation before.

He didn't have a playbook for it yet.

He didn't know what came after "please clean up the room."

And standing at the edge of his experience as a leader, he wanted to do something about it.

The Question

Here's how Nate framed it for the group, and we brought it to Digital Danny:

Notice what he did there.

He didn't sit with the discomfort alone, turning it over in his head for another month.

He brought it to the Mastermind and asked people who'd been further down the road than he had.

That single move, surfacing the thing you don't yet know how to do, is Selfmentorship in its most practical form: knowing where to go to find an answer, rather than sitting alone with the question.

The Comeback

The group worked through the issue:

  • How do you avoid painting yourself into a corner?

  • How do you ask for something that's going to get compliance?

  • Is holding staff accountable an act of support for the whole building?

Digital Danny distilled it into a system Nate could use immediately:

And then a follow up, in case it doesn’t go as planned, like this:

Simple, almost deceptively so.

Write it down. Follow up. Follow through.

No aggression, just clarity and consistency, repeated until it's second nature.

The Takeaway

Nate walked away with a script and a standard.

He left that hot seat committed to being clearer with staff moving forward, this fall, and again next summer school.

He learned that the core issue was that he hadn't yet built the muscle for this particular kind of hard conversation.

Now he has a starting point for building it.

That's usually how the art of Selfmentorship goes.

It feels awkward or uncomfortable. It often looks like a leader admitting I haven't done this before. Then comes the breakthrough.

You Don’t Have to Wait for the Next Hot Seat

Nate had a room full of people to ask.

Most of the time, you won't.

You'll be standing in the hallway, sorting through a challenging situation, wondering, Am I overreacting, or is this a time to hold the line?

There's no one to check it against until the next Mastermind call.

That's exactly the gap Digital Danny was built to close.

It's the same instinct behind everything we modelled for Nate: stay curious first, be specific, don't paint yourself into a corner.

And it’s available the moment you need it, not a week later.

If you're navigating a confrontation you don't have a playbook for yet, ask Digital Danny today.

SELFMENTORSHIP IN ACTION

The Parent Email You Keep Rereading

A parent email lands in your inbox, and you’ve read it over four times, each time feeling a little more defensive than the last.

By the fourth read you're not even seeing the email anymore.

You're responding in your head to a version that hasn’t happened yet.

You rehash it again over supper, instead of being present. And again later during a restless sleep.

So before you hit send, ask yourself: am I responding to what they wrote, or to a feeling I’m having?

Those are two different emails.

This week, before you reply to that message:

  • Draft your response first, in full, without softening anything. You could even delete the “to” email address

  • Set it aside for a few minutes

  • Read it back once, just for tone

  • If it sounds like you're defending yourself, or explaining more than you need to, you're probably answering a question the parent hasn’t asked

Selfmentorship is catching yourself mid-spiral and asking what you're actually reacting to before it ends up in your reply.
